10 RiversideHealthcare.org Atrial fibrillation, often called AFib, is one of the most common heart rhythm disorders, affecting millions of Americans. It occurs when the upper chambers of the heart, known as the atria, beat irregularly and out of sync with the lower chambers, disrupting the heart’s normal rhythm. “Atrial fibrillation is a condition where the top part of the heart, which is the atria, is fibrillating, which is quivering,” says Riverside Heart & Vascular Institute electrophysiologist Abhimanyu Beri, MD. “In the normal sequence of events, the top and the bottom of the heart should be beating in sync.” While some people experience noticeable symptoms, others may not realize they have AFib. Common symptoms can include heart palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, dizziness, and chest discomfort. In some cases, AFib may go undetected until it causes a more serious complication, such as a stroke. Risk factors Certain factors can increase the risk of developing AFib, including advancing age, diabetes, obesity, untreated sleep apnea, heart failure, excessive alcohol consumption, and family history. Fortunately, AFib can be diagnosed through an electrocardiogram (EKG) or heart monitoring devices that track the heart’s rhythm over time. Once diagnosed, treatment plans are customized to each patient’s individual needs. Options may include medications to control heart rate or reduce stroke risk, blood thinners, advanced procedures, or devices designed to help prevent stroke. Technology and expertise Riverside offers advanced AFib treatment options, including catheter ablation and the WATCHMAN device, which may help certain patients Understanding atrial fibrillation: When your heart falls out of rhythm reduce their stroke risk without the need for lifelong blood thinner medication. “Treatment needs to be individualized to every patient,” Dr. Beri says. “We definitely encourage patients to meet with their doctor. We are always available for consultation to help guide the most appropriate care for our patients.” If you experience symptoms or have concerns about your heart health, talk with your healthcare provider.
