6 RiversideHealthcare.org A concussion happens when a bump or jolt causes the brain to move inside the skull. Concussions are often associated with fall and winter sports such as football, soccer, cheerleading, and hockey. Even what seems like a minor hit to the head can result in a concussion. Protecting yourself and your family Not every concussion can be prevented, but you can take steps to reduce the risk: ● Wear properly fitted protective equipment, including helmets, when appropriate for your sport or activity. ● Learn and follow safe playing techniques and the rules of the game. ● Encourage coaches, athletes, and parents to take concussion concerns seriously. ● Stay physically active to maintain strength, balance, and coordination. Recognizing the signs Concussion symptoms can appear immediately or develop over the hours and days following an injury. Common signs include: ● Headache ● Dizziness ● Nausea or vomiting ● Confusion or difficulty concentrating ● Sensitivity to light or noise ● Blurred vision ● Changes in mood or sleep patterns ● Neck pain ● Head tenderness ● Loss of consciousness, although this does not occur in every concussion Athletes should never return to play until they have been evaluated and cleared by a healthcare professional. Early evaluation can help ensure the injury is properly managed and reduce the risk of complications. “Parents, coaches, teammates, and athletes all play an important role in concussion safety. When everyone understands the signs and symptoms of concussion, we can create a safer environment for athletes of all ages,” says Snigdha Kalidindi, MD, a sports medicine provider with Riverside Orthopedic Specialists. “As sports medicine providers, our goal is to help athletes recover fully and return safely to the activities they love.
