Follow Us Find your way faster Digital kiosks make navigating our campus intuitive and efficient With a visit to Riverside's main campus, you might see what looks like giant phones in some of the lobbies. These large pieces are part of Riverside’s new digital wayfinding system. The digital wayfinding kiosks are part of an effort to better guide patients and visitors throughout the hospital more efficiently. Next time you visit, give them a try! The new kiosks are designed to be user-friendly and essentially are giant cellphones. The screens are touch-responsive and allow visitors to search by a provider's name or by specialty. The kiosks also allow users to search by room or location. Once a destination is selected, the kiosks show the quickest route on the map with turn-by-turn steps, approximate time and distance. Visitors can zoom in and out, search for specific locations, and get detailed directions. This level of interactivity empowers visitors to take control of their journey, making navigation intuitive and efficient. The kiosks even provide a QR code that sends directions to a personal phone. Real-time data One of the most significant benefits of moving to digital wayfinding is the ability to provide realtime information. Traditional static signage takes significant planning and cost. Digital wayfinding systems, on the other hand, can instantly update information, ensuring visitors always have access to the most current data on routes, events, closures and other relevant details. Health care needs to be local care Occasionally, when I am talking with someone about Riverside they will say, “I didn’t know you did that at Riverside.” When this happens, it’s usually during a conversation about some advanced, complex procedure, and they assume it’s something that would have to done at a hospital “up north.” I take pride in letting them know that we have the experts and technology to do that very procedure right here at Riverside— and do it with great success. The interesting thing about health care is that it’s not something you usually spend much time thinking about until you need it. When you do need it, it’s hard to think about much else. And often, here in our community, the thought is that for more advanced health care you need to leave the area. Riverside was founded on the idea that the people in our service area deserve to have the health care they need available to them, right here, close to home. Health care, from basic care to advanced, needs to be local care. This edition of The Journey includes some things people may not know are available at Riverside—from advanced cardiac and spine surgery to life-changing carpal tunnel surgery and a world-class cancer program. Please take a moment to learn, or refresh your memory, about the extraordinary things we are doing here at Riverside. And the next time someone shares with you that they are needing some advanced health care, you’ll likely be able to tell them they are in luck—“Riverside does that.” Thank you, Phillip Kambic, President and CEO, Riverside Healthcare

Riverside’s neurosurgeons are specially trained in some of the most advanced, minimally invasive techniques and technologies. With leading-edge technology, like the TrueBeam, access to hot-off-the-press oncology treatments and an excellent oncologic care team, patients have access to the best possible care, right here in the community. 1 Heart care The award-winning team at Riverside’s Heart & Vascular Institute specializes in cardiology, interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiac surgery and vascular surgery, all right here in the community. Fall/Winter 2023 5 Patients have access to the latest in cancer treatment technology at Riverside Cancer Institute. 4 Orthopedics Riverside Orthopedics provides relief for those living with chronic pain and restricted mobility looking to return to a quality life. Our orthopedic team treats a wide range of conditions and sees patients of all ages—children, adolescents, adults and older ages. Some people may need surgery and rehabilitation, while others can be treated with nonsurgical approaches. What really sets Riverside apart from others is the talent of our team. We offer expertise with a dedicated hand surgeon, sports medicine specialists and even physicians focused on robotic surgery. Using Mako SmartRobotics, our team is able to use 3D, CT-based software to cut incredibly precisely, protecting healthy bone and allowing for a better implant fit. Additionally, the robot’s AccuStop technology helps to better guide the surgeon in areas that are difficult to see, allowing for less cutting. “By embracing Mako Robotics in surgery, we’re ensuring the highest level of precision, faster recovery and a more tailored approach to unique needs, all to make the journey to better health smoother and safer,” says Riverside Orthopedic Surgeon Mohammed Ahmed, MD. Same-day carpal tunnel release Orthopedic hand surgeon Taruna Madhav Crawford, MD, CIME, and orthopedic surgeon Jonathan Cotton, MD, now offer carpal tunnel release with UltraGuideCTR by Sonex Health. The low-profile UltraGuideCTR uses technology developed by physicians at the Mayo Clinic. The design allows carpal tunnel release (CTR) through a single incision while protecting sensitive anatomy. “For many, the Sonex procedure offers an opportunity to get the relief they seek,” says Dr. Crawford. “Often, my patients are apprehensive because of the recovery time associated with traditional carpal tunnel surgery. This offers a different approach.” CTR with UltraGuideCTR is performed under real-time ultrasound guidance. This enables the physician to perform CTR through a small incision, typically closed with an adhesive strip or bandage instead of sutures. The procedure can be completed in an outpatient setting and using local anesthesia. It can reduce pain and allow for faster recovery. Most patients return to regular activity in three to six days. The Mako robot offers surgeons the highest level of precision. Patients living with chronic pain and restricted mobility can get help regaining their quality of life at the Riverside Orthopedic & Spine Center. —Continued on page 6

8 RiversideHealthcare.org Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is so common that nearly all children have had it by their second birthday. But what is RSV? And why is it important to recognize when your child has RSV— especially RSV that may be getting worse? RSV is a cold-like illness that affects the lungs, nose and throat. “RSV can spread easily from person to person,” says Riverside primary care provider Ramanpreet Grewal, MD. “This virus lives in the droplets that go into the air when a sick person coughs or sneezes. One can also get it from direct exposure to the virus droplets.” Most kids who get RSV recover on their own in a week or two. But young children with RSV can sometimes get very sick. They may get bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lungs) or pneumonia and need to be hospitalized for a few days. Spot the signs RSV often starts like a mild cold. The symptoms may include a runny nose, a cough, and a fever of 100.4 degrees or higher. Very young babies with Ramanpreet Grewal, MD Riverside Primary Care Find a caring provider To find a provider that’s right for your family, visit RiversideHealthcare.org/primarycare. Caring for a child with RSV There is no cure for RSV. But you may be able to ease the symptoms until the virus runs its course by: ● Using nasal saline and a suction bulb to clear a stuffy nose for easier breathing. ● Giving your child over-thecounter medicines as directed by your child’s doctor. ● Helping your child drink plenty of fluids to help prevent dehydration. If your child has worsening RSV symptoms, be sure to call and make an appointment with their doctor. RSV Plus, tips for easing the symptoms How to spot the signs of RSV may only be cranky, tired and less interested in feeding. If the RSV gets worse, children may have additional symptoms, like fast breathing or wheezing (a whistling sound when your child breathes). When to call the doctor You should call your child’s doctor if your child has trouble breathing or other worsening symptoms; trouble drinking; signs of dehydration (such as fewer than one wet diaper per eight hours); or decreased alertness. “You should also call your doctor if your child has any of these RSV symptoms and is under 3 months of age,” Dr. Grewal adds. Fall/Winter 2023 9 DIABETES Navigating healthy choices during the holidays Live well with diabetes Riverside Diabetes Wellness Center, recognized by the American Diabetes Association, offers a unique program focused on helping you prevent or manage diabetes. Learn more at RiversideHealthcare.org/ services/diabetes-and-endocrinology. Plan ahead: Before attending holiday gatherings, plan your meals and snacks for the day. Choose a balance of carbohydrates, protein and healthy fats to help stabilize blood sugar levels. This will prevent you from overindulging. Stay hydrated: Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. This can help control your appetite and prevent overeating. Portion control: Enjoy holiday dishes in moderation. Use smaller plates, and be mindful of portion sizes. Opt for a mix of lean proteins, vegetables and whole grains to create a balanced plate. Stay active: Go for a walk after meals or engage in a fun outdoor activity with friends and family. Exercise can help regulate blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity. In conclusion, individuals with diabetes can enjoy the holiday season without compromising their health. By planning ahead, making mindful choices and staying active, you can navigate through festive gatherings while keeping your blood sugar levels under control. “Remember, moderation is key, and with a little preparation, you can savor the holiday spirit while maintaining your diabetes management goals,” says Dr. Yap. Healthy substitutions: Try swapping refined sugars with natural sweeteners like stevia or erythritol. Use whole grains instead of refined flours, and incorporate fruits and nuts for added flavor and nutrition. Monitor blood sugar: Regularly monitor your blood sugar levels, especially during the holiday season. This will help you understand how different foods and activities affect your body and allow you to adjust. Prioritize protein and fiber: Include foods rich in protein and fiber in your meals. These nutrients help stabilize blood sugar levels and keep you feeling full longer, reducing the temptation to overindulge. The holiday season is a time of joy, celebration and indulgence. However, for those living with diabetes, maintaining healthy eating habits can pose a challenge amid the plethora of tempting treats. “At the Riverside Diabetes Wellness Center, we teach our patients that they can still eat the foods they love while being mindful of their diabetes,” says Sara Yap, MD, endocrinologist at Riverside. 10 RiversideHealthcare.org Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. and a significant cause of adult disability. That’s why taking steps to prevent a stroke is so important. A stroke happens when blood flow to the brain is cut off. This causes brain cells to die and is an emergency requiring immediate treatment. If you or anyone you know experiences one or more of the symptoms illustrated below, call 911 right away. Why you need to act fast As soon as blood flow is blocked, cells in the brain start to die because they aren’t getting the oxygen and blood they need to survive. Dead brain cells can’t be brought back to life. Damage from the most common type of stroke can often be stopped by a medication called alteplase IV r-tPA, which can bust open a clot. But it must be given within a three-hour window. To leave time for evaluation and diagnosis, someone having a stroke must get to a hospital within 60 minutes of when they first started having symptoms. An emerging field that holds great potential to improve stroke outcomes is being used by Riverside. Riverside’s emergency room has begun using Viz.ai software to better diagnose stroke upon a patient’s arrival in the ER. The platform allows multiple providers to review CT scans in real time for more accurate diagnoses, personalized treatments If you suspect you or someone else is having a stroke, think BE FAST. This acronym is an easy way to remember some of the signs and symptoms of stroke and when to get medical help. It also reminds you that stroke is an emergency and that you need to get help quickly. B E F A S Balance loss. Eyesight changes. Face drooping. Arm weakness. Speech difficulty. TIME TO CALL 911. Spot a stroke and more efficient use of resources. Additionally, the technology highlights areas of scans that could be potential problem areas that physicians should closely examine. Before Viz.ai software, patients with strokes would undergo CT scans and wait for providers to review them in a chain of approvals, from radiologists to neurologists and ER physicians. With the new Viz.ai software, Riverside is now diagnosing patients with strokes much quicker and beginning treatment sooner, allowing for more localized care. Fall/Winter 2023 11 CDC, in the interim, has put out recommendations to avoid all forms of e-cigarettes and vaping, especially in young adults and pregnant women, who are most at risk.” Help for kicking the habit Dr. Almeida points to better, more effective ways than vaping that can help people stop smoking. Riverside offers smoking cessation programs and counseling services. She notes the need “to tackle every new thing with a curious eye, put it under a lens and identify its potential danger before it becomes an epidemic.” “We need to learn from our mistakes,” Dr. Almeida cautions. “We were not aware of all of this when traditional cigarettes came out initially, and we are heading toward an epidemic where we’re making the same mistake again.” Harmful effects Diagnoses of e-cigarette or vaping product use associated lung injury (EVALI), a severe pulmonary illness associated with the use of e-cigarettes or vaping products, peaked in 2019. Symptoms of EVALI include: ● Shortness of breath. ● Fever. ● Cough. ● Vomiting. ● Diarrhea. ● Headache. ● Dizziness. ● Chest pain. The dangers of vaping While not approved by the FDA as a smoking cessation tool, many individuals use e-cigarettes as a “safe” way to quit smoking. The evolution of the industry has seen an expansion in audience, with teens and preteens obtaining access to vaping devices. Unfortunately, these devices are anything but safe. “Vaping, as the name suggests, is misleading. It’s not as benign as it sounds. It’s converting e-liquids, which are solvents, into aerosols,” explains Roselle Almeida, MD, a pulmonologist with Riverside Medical Group. “The e-liquids involve substances and solvents like propylene glycol, alcohols and nicotine in very high amounts. There are 15,000 kinds of (flavored e-liquids) available, and they are extremely toxic to the lungs and other organs of the body.” The teen epidemic Young adults and teenagers have key brain receptors that are much more sensitive to nicotine. The nicotine level in many of the e-liquids on the market equals an entire pack of cigarettes. “The nicotine attaches to these receptors, and the habit becomes much more addictive,” Dr. Almeida notes. “It also attracts (youth) to other substances and behavioral issues. Anxiety, depression, other drug abuse—it is all part of this.” Many of the current vaping devices don’t look anything like the previous generations of e-cigarette models. Some resemble a USB drive, making it easier for teens to hide their vaping behaviors at home and school—a marketing tactic e-cigarette brands have used to sell more product. In response to the spike in vaping-related illness and death in 2019, a number of states have implemented their own regulations to prevent the sale of e-cigarette devices and liquids. Is that enough? “We still don’t know what’s causing the specific illnesses. So now is a time for action—now is the time to make these regulations,” asserts Dr. Almeida. “States have already starting banning flavored e-cigarettes, and the Roselle Almeida, MD Riverside Pulmonologist

12 RiversideHealthcare.org Do you have pain or burning when you urinate? If so, you may have a urinary tract infection (UTI). What is a UTI? Bladder infections are the most common type of UTI. They happen when bacteria from the skin or rectum get into the urinary tract. Along with discomfort, cramps and frequent urination, you may have pink urine, caused by blood from the infection. “Prompt treatment is important. If the infection spreads, it can cause a kidney infection, which is much more serious. Fever, back pain, nausea or vomiting are common symptoms of a kidney infection,” says Riverside Immediate Care provider Liz Chase, NP-C. Anyone can get a UTI, but they are more common in women. The urethra, which controls urine flow, is shorter in women than in men. It’s also closer to the rectum, where the bacteria that cause these infections are. Many women will get a bladder infection (also called cystitis) at some point in their lives. Prevention Here are some ways to reduce your chances of getting a UTI: ● Urinate after sexual activity. ● Drink plenty of fluids daily. ● Take showers more frequently than baths. ● Avoid or minimize the use of powders or other products on the genital area. Treatment “Talk to your health care provider as soon as you suspect you have a UTI,” Chase urges. “For quick treatment when you need it, an Immediate Care is a great place to go to get relief.” Liz Chase, NP-C Riverside Immediate Care How to prevent and treat UTIs You may receive a prescription for antibiotics. Be sure to take all the prescribed doses, even if you feel better. Also, drink plenty of water and other fluids. Your provider can recommend medicine for reducing pain and discomfort. If you think you have a UTI and would like to get fast relief, visit a Riverside Immediate Care. Riverside has locations in Bradley, Kankakee, Coal City and Watseka.
